• Correct installation is essential for safe operation. Begin by positioning the gather hood at the base of your masonry chimney. • Ensure that the chimney system has been designed to allow for easy sweeping and maintenance access. • Attach the gather hood using the provided adaptor to connect the flexible flue liner securely. • For a gas-tight seal, use bottom fixings combined with high-temperature sealants such as fire cement, ceramic rope, or tape. • It is important that the installation complies with the Building Regulations Document J, ensuring full enclosure within a masonry structure. • Always verify that your appliance operates within the recommended temperature limit of up to 600°C. • Regular cleaning, at least twice a year for solid fuel applications, is recommended to maintain efficiency and safety.

A gather hood is used to expand the area for escaping gasses when a flexible flue liner is installed above an open fireplace. This ensures efficient gas flow up the chimney liner.

The gather hood attaches to the base of the chimney. Its metal flaps are folded at right angles and screwed into the brickwork for secure installation. An adaptor attaches the flexible flue liner to the hood.

Yes, the gather hood is suitable for appliances operating at temperatures up to 600°C (T600 designation) and can be used with wood (under 20% moisture), smokeless coal, gas, and oil-fired appliances.

Chimney systems should be designed for easy sweeping and maintenance access. It’s recommended to clean chimneys serving solid fuel appliances at least twice a year, ideally at the end and start of the heating season.

No, Building Regulations Document J specifies that flexible flue liners, including those with a gather hood, must be completely enclosed within a masonry chimney. Non-masonry enclosures are not acceptable.

For a secure and gas-tight seal, you can use fire cement, ceramic rope or tape, or high-temperature sealant during the installation of the gather hood.

Yes, it’s recommended to have the chimney system swept by a competent person. Solid fuel applications should use HETAS registered sweeps, whose services can be found at www.hetas.co.uk.
